The first edition of “Eugene Onegin” sold in London

The first edition of the novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin ” Eugene Onegin ” went to Christie’s auction in London for 467.2 thousand pounds sterling, exceeding the lower benchmark estimate almost four times, the representative of the auction house told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
More than 120 rare print editions from the private European collection were put up for sale in the “Golden Age of Russian Literature”. Estimate of the first edition of the Pushkin novel in verse was 120-160 thousand pounds.
“The edition of Eugene Onegin”, issued by the printing house of the Department of Public Education of St. Petersburg, is a true bibliographic rarity. The set includes the first chapter of the novel in its original binding, said a representative of Christie’s earlier.
The first rare edition of “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka” by Nikolai Gogol , estimated at 70-90 thousand pounds sterling, went under the hammer for 175 thousand.
“Until now, a full copy of this two-volume book appeared at auction twice,” – said the representative of the auction house.
The first edition of “Ruslan and Lyudmila” Pushkin sold for 143.7 thousand pounds with an estimate of 50-80 thousand. The first edition of the poetry book by Athanasius Feta “Lyrical Pantheon” sold for 100 thousand, with an estimate of 20-30.
Total trades brought more than 2.2 million pounds. This year, the Russian department of Christie’s celebrates its 50th anniversary.
